For a long time, a skateboard has been a sports equipment for performing difficult tricks or a fashion accessory. But more and more people have chosen a skateboard as a convenient means of getting around town. In order to choose the right skateboard, you need to consider the design and purpose of the skateboard.
A lot of time has passed since the invention of the skateboard. The design has been improved, there were new types of skateboards. But the designs of all models include the following standard components.
Deck.
A deck is the platform on which a skater stands with his feet. Decks are made from seven or nine layers of veneer of a certain type of wood. The number of layers and the type of wood used affects the skateboard’s properties such as weight and flexibility. Seven-ply decks made from Canadian maple are said to have the best ratio of weight, strength and bounce.
Skateboard decks are often not flat, but have curved edges (concave). These edges on the deck allow for better control of the skateboard when moving and performing tricks. And almost all skateboards have a curved tail (keetail). It is also used for performing tricks. To increase the grip of the sole of the shoe on the deck, it is glued a special sandpaper-like skin (griptail).
Wheels.
Skateboard wheels are made from high-strength polyurethane. The most versatile stiffness range is 85A-94A. The higher the number, the stiffer the wheel is. Harder wheels provide good acceleration, while softer wheels provide good grip and absorb vibration.
Tracks.
The track (suspension) is where the wheels are attached to the deck. The track has one central bolt (kingpin) and four additional bolts that are used to attach the track to the deck. It is mandatory to fit shock absorbers (bushings) inside.
Skateboard types.
Longboard.
A longboard is a skateboard with a long deck and a wide wheel base. This design gives it high stability and stability at speed and during acceleration. Longboards are not suitable for trick riding.
Penny board.
The Penny Board is a skateboard with a plastic deck and a wide wheel base. Thanks to its smaller deck and cushioned wheels, it’s perfect for walking around town. The plastic deck has a colourful design, doesn’t break down due to water damage and is easy to store.
Classic skateboard.
This type of skateboard has the familiar look of a wooden deck, bent nose, tail, sides and small wheels. It is used for trick riding.
Choosing the right type of skateboard, you need to think about a set of protection (helmet, elbow pads, knees and wrist protection). A protection kit like this can protect the skater from serious injury.
